Angi and I took the Fourth of July weekend to bag some of the more straightforward of Colorado's peaks over 14,000 feet. These peaks are in one of our more tame ranges, the Sawatch. Known for their long approaches and gentle slopes, we planned an ambitious trip to top four peaks in three days.
After driving down Friday afternoon, we setup camp at the base of Huron Peak. After our successful ascent of Huron, we drove a few miles and hauled our gear 2,000' up into Missouri Gulch. We Awoke at 1:30am to climb Mt. Belford for sunrise, and then it was on to Mt. Oxford. After a return to the tent and a good nights sleep, it was off to Missouri Mountain, where we persevered through a brisk July snow squall to reach the summit.
Our drive home was hampered by unimaginable traffic on I-70, as we sat stopped for about twenty minutes. We were pooped, and our knees sore, but the trip was well worth it. Angi now has 18 fourteeners, and I have 22.
